Infant School Admissions

Children are admitted into school in September of the year in which they are five. Parents may wish to defer entry to school until later in the school year. At the end of the first year in Reception they move into Year One and then after another year, they move into Year Two. Nursery children must re-apply for a school place. It does not always follow that a child with a nursery place is guaranteed a place in school. Year 2 children automatically transfer to Alexandra Park Junior School, unless parents chose a different junior school place.

On entering school, children are admitted into the Reception Area. This has separate entrance and separate cloakrooms. The children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum which links into the National Curriculum. First hand experience and investigative learning are encouraged through creative activities such as story telling, painting, structured indoor and outdoor play activities, small world and construction equipment. The concepts of number, reading and writing are all linked into the planned activities and opportunities and the children are introduced to the Numeracy and Literacy learning that they will continue with in Key Stage One. There is an excellent ratio of teacher/qualified teaching assistant: child.

Our aim is to provide an excellent education for every child enabling them to be well prepared for their next stage of learning.  When the children move into Year One they begin working on the National Curriculum at Key Stage One. Their individual records (Foundation Stage Profile) are transferred from the Foundation Stage to our National Curriculum records. The activities they participate in lead towards the National Curriculum Assessments during the Summer Term of Year Two. The children are taught English and Mathematics daily. Again, an excellent child : teacher /qualified teaching  assistant ratio is maintained.

Every age range has a full-time Bilingual Teaching Assistant to support our learners and their families who do not speak English as their first language.

All teachers, by law, are entitled to 10% of their teaching time as Planning, Preparation and Assessment time. This is covered by a teacher or senior teaching assistants who are qualified to be involved in the planning, teaching and assessment of the children’s learning.

Nursery Admissions

The Local Authority determines the policy of Admission.

Parents considering the admission of their children to Glodwick Infant and Nursery School can make arrangements to visit by contacting the Head Teacher, Mrs. J.E.A. Brierley, by telephone or by coming into the school and making an appointment to see her. Names of children requesting places at Nursery can be dealt with by Mrs. S. Barlow and Mrs. E. Hudson.

Please Note: All applications for Reception Places must be made through the Local Authority Admissions department at the Civic Centre in Oldham, via Oldham Council website.

Children can be admitted for the first time to our Nursery during the school year that they become three years old. Parents should state a preference for morning or afternoon sessions. Nursery children must re-apply for a school place. A place in our Nursery does not guarantee a Reception class place.  The Nursery is housed in a separate building, but it is part of the main school in terms of the Governing Body, organisation and management, planning and budget control. The children in the Nursery are taught by full-time teachers and highly qualified teaching assistants, including a highly qualified bilingual teaching Assistant.  A range of activities are provided in order that the children develop emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially.

The Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum covering the Foundation Stage of Learning. This curriculum is delivered indoors and out.  Great emphasis is placed on developing close links between the Nursery and the main school. There are close links with the Reception Area. The Nursery children come over to school twice a term for Whole School Assemblies.  They also have visits to the Reception Area as part of transition.

In addition, we also place great emphasis on developing close links between home and nursery school. Parents are welcome to spend time alongside their child in the Nursery during the daily welcome session and stay and play sessions. The children who are offered a place will all have the opportunity to visit the Nursery during the months of June and July. There is an ‘Open Event’ in the Summer Term, before the children start their Nursery Education, in order to establish a Parent/School Partnership. We hold an information meeting for the parents of children due to start in Reception during their final term in the Nursery. There is always an interpreter at our parents meetings to enable everyone to participate fully.

We admit children who are three before  1 September in September.

We admit children who are three before 1 January 2020 in January.

We admit children who are three before 1 April 2020 in April.

This means that some children benefit from 5 terms of outstanding early years education at Glodwick before they begin their reception year.
